The Whitsunday Islands were named by Captain James Cook back in 1770 when he was traveling around the east coast of Australia. It was supposedly the festival of Whit Sunday on the day he was there, hence the name.

Getting There
Prosperine Airport, also known as Whitsunday Coast Airport, is in the vicinity. Flights to there are via Virgin Airlines and also Jetstar. There is a local train station too which is on the east coast line and the bus service is provided by Greyhound and Premier coaches, stopping off on their way between Cairns and Brisbane.

Getting Around When There
Once you arrive at the airport there is a choice between a regular bus service which goes to the town of Airlie Beach or you can travel by taxi. Both are the same price – $15 Australian. The journey takes around 40 minutes from the airport to town center.

What To Do
For swimming, Airlie Beach is not the best place. Between the months of October and May stinging jellyfish frequent the coastal waters. You can though either purchase or hire a “stinger suit” if you wish to swim in the ocean, which offers full protection against the jellyfish. Also there is a beautiful man made lagoon which stretches 50 meters wide by 200 meters long.

However, to compensate for this, there is a lovely man-made lagoon which is ideal to take a swim, and of course its very safe for the kids too. The lagoon is watched over by life guards just to make it even more safe for bathers. On Saturday mornings there is a local market beside the beach that sells local crafts and local food stuffs. All in all Airlie Beach is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy some of life’s pleasures!
